Following a violent shipwreck twins Sebastian and Viola are separated and stranded in the city of Illyria. Assuming her brother bo be dead fearing for her safety, Viola disguises herself as a young man named “Cesario” and joins the court of Duke Orsino, the unsuccessful suitor of Countess Olivia. In a further attempt to woo Olivia, Orsino sends “Cesario” on his behalf to recite poetry. However, in deep mourning for the death of her father and brother Olivia refuses to accept any suitors. “Cesario” persists and gains entry to Olivia’s house, but instead of falling for Orsino, Olivia falls in love with “Cesario”. The feelings are not returned since “Cesario” has already become smitten with Orsino. Meanwhile the court of Olivia’s house is overrun with the foolery of her uncle Sir Toby Belch, Feste the Clown, and the wealthy but naïve Sir Andrew Aguecheek. Sir Toby has convinced Sir Andrew he is a hopeful candidate for Olivia’s affections and encourages him to challenge “Cesario” to a duel. However, the revelry of Sir Toby’s gang is often disrupted by Olivia’s strict and ambitious steward, Malvolio. Determined to teach Malvolio a lesson for his pompous ways the group relies on Olivia’s handmaid Maria to concoct a trick. Maria write a letter in Olivia’s hand making Malvolio believes she is in love with him. The letter directs Malvolio to smile excessively when Olivia is near, be stern with the servants and her uncle, and dress with unfashionable yellow cross-cross-gartered leggings. Malvolio finds the letter and is immediately hoodwinked. Believing Malvolio insane Olivia demands him to be locked up where the tricksters continue to torment him. While Viola struggles within a love triangle between Olivia and Orsino, her brother Sebastian is rescued by an eager gentleman, Antonio, who has mysterious business in Illyria. Drama ensues when Olivia mistakes Sebastian for “Cesario” and demands to be married to him at once. When Olivia next sees “Cesario” with Orsino she claims him as her husband. Confusion ensues until Sebastian appears and all is explained.
