The Montagues and Capulets are sworn enemies; attacks and insults are common and brawls erupt regularly even though the Prince forbids them.
The play opens with Peter, a servant in the House of Capulet, insulting Romeo's friend Mercutio. When Romeo's cousin Benvolio tries to stop the fight, Tybalt, another Capulet, enters and challenges him. The Prince arrives and stops the fight before taking Father Capulet away to discuss his penalty for the brawl; Montague is to come later to learn his penalty. Romeo missed the brawl because he has been out all night, pining for his unrequited love: Rosaline. Benvolio suggests Romeo should consider other girls. When they find out that Rosaline will be at a masked party at the Capulet's they decide to go and compare her against other young women. Juliet's father tells Paris that he should attend the party and that he may woo Juliet. Romeo sees Juliet at the party and is immediately smitten by her; it is love at first sight for Juliet as well. Tybalt recognizes Romeo and wants to kill him but is stopped by Capulet. Romeo ditches his friends on the way home and goes back to the Capulet's where he sees Juliet on her balcony. They promise their love to each other and plan to marry the next day.
