Hamlet has come home for his father’s funeral only to discover that his widowed mother is married to her husband’s brother. Two members of the night watch have seen something unusual and ask their friend Horatio to watch and explain. They see the ghost of the former king who has returned from the grave to ask his son Hamlet to seek revenge. The ghost reveals that Claudius has poisoned him then married the Queen and usurped the throne. Hamlet will feign madness to uncover the truth and determine whether the ghost is his father or a demon from hell. Meanwhile Ophelia, Hamlet’s girlfriend, is warned by Laertes, her brother, and commanded by Polonius, her father, not to see Hamlet: he is a prince and out of her sphere. This breaks her heart and Hamlet’s. Polonius suggests that Hamlet’s madness is caused by Ophelia’s rejection of his love and spies on them to verify it. The King and Queen summon Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to “lead Hamlet on to pleasures” and determine what is wrong with him. A group of players arrive at the castle and Hamlet asks them to perform a special play. After the uproar caused by the play Hamlet visits his mother in her private room and mistakenly stabs Polonius who is there to spy. Polonius’ death gives Claudius all the excuse he needs to send Hamlet away.
