Staging the Future Campaign

Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan has moved forward with a plan supported by our audience, partners and stakeholders to build a permanent base for our main stage tent and enhanced infrastructures for the festival!  This project has many benefits for your Shakespeare Festival, partner organizations in our area and all the citizens of Saskatoon.  It will:

  • Eliminate our annual lengthy and expensive 5 week set up process through permanent landscaping, purpose-built structures and modern technical enhancements.  This allows us to greatly enhance our artistic product and broaden opportunities for local artists.
  • Expand opportunities to enjoy a longer festival season, which will generate positive economic impact for the organization and create partnership and site usage opportunities for additional groups, organizations and events!
  • Allow us to meaningfully address TRC recommendations through partnerships and consultations with Indigenous groups in Saskatoon (click here for more on Reconciliation)
  • Route the publicly accessible Meewasin Trail through the site and greatly increase four-season site accessibility, usership and enjoyment
  • Provide, in partnership with the city, winterized, larger washrooms for the convenience of off-season users of the site and trail
  • Enhance, in partnership with the MVA, safety and accessibility features like upgraded pathways, more disability parking and a drop-off area
  • Include modern conveniences for performers and staff with off-season storage and a central pavilion with modern dressing rooms
  • Add services such as a concession, box office, and bar/kitchen
  • Include state-of-the-art LED lighting to really make the site sparkle
  • Include opportunities for future expansion

Making the site more accessible year-round for activities, user partners and the public just makes sense. At the same time it will support the “winter city strategy” of the City of Saskatoon. Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan will open this beautifully transformed site in the spring of 2020!
